Professor George Barany

Department of Chemistry, University of Minnesota

Professor Barany’s contributions to the fields of peptide chemistry and organosulfur chemistry span the fields of solid-phase synthesis, polymer science, protein folding, and medicinal chemistry, among others. Professor Barany’s scientific leadership and innovation, described in ~350 publications and 40+ patents, continue to pay dividends for science, and society more broadly. For example, his development of orthogonal protecting group strategies for peptide synthesis are critical to the discovery of new peptide ligands for novel protein targets and in the manufacture of some of the world’s most important medicines. He has also been a tremendous mentor to trainees at all levels, and his protégés have gone on to successful careers in academia, government laboratories, and industry, including some who have founded biotech companies or co-invented FDA-and EMA-approved peptide medicines like tirzepatide (Eli Lilly) and zilucoplan (UCB).

All new sponsors will be added to this website, immediately above.

Special puzzles and games for the Barany symposium

In addition to Professor Barany’s many scientific contributions which are the main focus of the Symposium, he has created hundreds of crossword puzzles with a variety of gifted collaborators over the past quarter century. The organizers of this Symposium commissioned a special puzzle, entitled “Minneapolis Star Tribute”, from Christopher Adams, a professional crossword constructor based in the Midwest. Additional puzzles were contributed by a variety of individuals, and are compiled on our Puzzle page. Several of these will be in “contest” mode through 7 AM CDT on Saturday, June 8, 2024, and multiple prizes will be offered; you do not need to be registered in order to participate. Puzzles can be solved both on paper (pdf) or online (amuselabs sites). Note that within a few days of when the contests end, we will post answer keys, along with fully interactive online versions that include “check” and “reveal” functionalities. For certain puzzles, we will even provide a relevant “midrash”. We hope that you will enjoy these puzzles, which were designed to add an extra layer of fun to our proceedings!
