Puzzles
Special puzzles and games for the Barany symposium
Overview
With the benefit of hindsight, Professor Barany’s interest in puzzles stems all the way back to his childhood, but he became more serious about the cruciverbal arts in the late-1990s. Generally working with gifted collaborators, George honed his craft and eventually founded the Barany and Friends website which flourished in the 2010s but has more recently been dormant—one of his “retirement” projects will be to reboot the site to be better, if not necessarily bigger. For the past seven years, George has worked with Christopher Adams to create a quarterly puzzle for the Minneapolis Star Tribune magazine, and he has also tackled several additional interesting puzzling or game projects.
For this Symposium, the organizers commissioned Adams to construct “Minnesota Star Tribute”, a Sunday-sized (21x) puzzle with several amazing layers that you will have to discover for yourself. As of June 1, this puzzle is available to solve in “contest” mode. Early on the morning of Saturday, June 8, 2024, the contest ends and the puzzle will be unlocked, thereby enabling “reveal” and “check” functionalities. Three additional puzzles are presented under the same conditions, and there then follow other brainteasers for your solving pleasure, at your own pace. IMPORTANT UPDATE: The original contest deadline applies only to “Connections”. The new deadline for the other three puzzles is 11:59 PM on Sunday, June 30, 2024. SECOND UPDATE: The contest is now closed. Eventually, we will post a “midrash” for each of several puzzles.

The first four puzzles on this page are in "CONTEST" mode, with PRIZES. The deadline for the “Connections” puzzle contest is early the morning of Saturday, June 8, 2024, for reasons that will eventually become self-evident. The deadline for the other three puzzles is 11:59 PM on Sunday, June 30, 2024. The contest is open to all who learn about it, regardless of whether or not you are participating in the Chicago activities.
For each puzzle that you complete, do the following: (a) email an image (screen shot, scan, etc.) to barany@umn.edu; (b) provide your name (required); (c) indicate whether or not you are willing to be identified, verbally and/or in an email and/or on a website (positive consent required); (d) provide a mailing address for those prizes that will be sent via US mail (optional); (e) briefly outline your method for solving the puzzle(s), specifically what (if any) resources you called upon (honor system); and (f) provide any additional information about yourself and/or your solving process that may help the judges determine winners. The reasons for (e) and (f) is that we intend to award prizes in multiple categories, e.g., Symposium registrant; non-scientist; unassociated with the University of Minnesota; under age 12; over age 70; and possibly other categories.
Finally, if you like our puzzles (compiled at this site, which we aim to reboot later this summer) and would like to receive more in our bcc distribution list, please say so, let your friends know, and consider supporting the Symposium (if you have the means to do so) by clicking here.
